Frequently Asked Questions
Listed below are some of the most common questions we get regarding autism and our programs. If you have additional questions please do not hesitate to contact us during our regular school hours.
What is Autism?
Autism is a complex neuro-behavioural condition that includes impairments in social interaction and developmental language and communication skills combined with rigid, repetitive behaviours. Because of the range of symptoms, this condition is now call autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It covers a large spectrum of symptoms, skills and levels of impairment. ASD ranges in severity from deficits that somewhat limit an otherwise normal life to a devastating disability that may require intense intervention.
What is ABA?
ABA stands for Applied Behaviour Analysis. It is a branch of psychology that involves analyzing and modifying human behaviour. ABA is the application of the science of behaviour to increase or decrease a particular behaviour, to improve the quality of a behaviour, to stop an old behaviour, or to teach a new behaviour.
ABA focuses on breaking behaviours down into small discrete steps, and then teaching each step in a structured and hierarchical fashion, providing guidance in the form of prompts, and providing positive reinforcement for correct responding.
The principles of ABA have been around for some time, and have multiple uses outside the scope of teaching children with autism. ABA can be the basis of programs addressing a wide range of human behaviour.
ABA is a framework for the practice and application of the science of behaviourism and not a specific program. Rather it is a set of principles and guidelines upon which educational programs are based.

Occupational Therapists and Speech and Language Pathologists work with our educational team through a combination of hands on training in the classrooms, direct student supports and services, consultations, group presentations and workshops. The type of services provided is dependent on the needs of individual students, classroom objectives and provides the best supports for the educational team who are implementing the supports and strategies throughout the year.
